Report: Former NBA Ref Bet On Over 100 Games

Tim Donaghy worked games from 1994 to 2007, until an FBI report revealed that he had a gambling problem and was fixing NBA games.

A new report shows that Donaghy may have bet on more than 100 games, including 14 last season.

From FOXSPORTS.COM:

The new filings state that he bet on about half of the games he officiated in each of the last four seasons, and the government claims he cost the association $304,858 by depriving them of his “honest services.”

The rogue ref already coughed up $30,000 in restitution to the government; the $304,858 figure would only be used to drive up his prison term when he’s sentenced on July 14.

Although the report doesn’t pin down an exact number of games where Donaghy had interfered, it’s not really significant. Jail time is a given at this point. The maximum penalty would be 25 years, but since he has cooperated with investigators, his sentence may be reduced.

PREGAME.COM has some impressive statistical evidence against Donaghy:

The first 15 games of the 2006-07 refereed by Tim Donaghy that had big enough betting to move the point spread by at least 1.5 points were UNDEFEATED against Las Vegas meaning that the big money gamblers won a 15 of 15 times on his games. The odds of that happening randomly are 32,768 to 1.

…Tim Donaghy officiating style statistically changed during the 2005/06 and 06/07 seasons. During the two years prior (i.e., 03/04 and 04/05) he called significantly less fouls than the average NBA referee (his games scored more than Las Vegas expected only 44% of the time). During his last two seasons he called significantly more fouls than average (his games scored more than Las Vegas expected 57% of the time). The odds of this change happening randomly are approximately 19 to 1.

Don’t let this ruin your playoffs, unless of course the Cavs get absolutely hosed on a call late in the game. That would be disasterous. Unless you hate the Cavs.
