COMING SOON TO A PARK NEAR YOU - THE RENO MARMOTS?: A fierce debate is raging in Reno - all about what to call the new team coming to down.
The RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL names names, as the minor league baseball club coming to the Biggest Little City in the World tries to find a new identity.
A group called SK Baseball recently purchased the Tucson Sidewinders, a Triple-A affiliate of the Diamondbacks, and plans on relocating the team to the Nevada city. Of course, there’s still a little matter of getting a 2-cent car rental tax passed to help finance a new stadium.
Regardless, suggestions have come fast and furious for a new minor league moniker. One idea has been the Reno Marmots, named after a squirrel-like mammal that lives in the area. Other proposals include Gamblers, Ramblers, Renegades, Rustlers, Dust Devils, Colts and Red Hawks.
Another idea given was the Reno Mustangs. However, team officials may be worried the name would be too closely associated with the Mustang Ranch, the famous brothel located just outside town.
A big boon to any minor league franchise is a memorable name, not only to get people to the park, but to sell as much merchandise they can to diehards and casual fans alike.
Recent re-namings like the Montgomery Biscuits, Great Lakes Loons and Modesto Nuts can grab national attention for their originality, and get some collectors in L.A. or New York to pony up for a shirt or two.
Reno already has a minor league team in town - the Silver Sox, who play in the independent Golden League. But with a 10,000-seat stadium in the works, not to mention the backing of Major League money, the future existence of the Silver Sox doesn’t appear to pan out.
