The LONDON GUARDIAN reports that starting in 2008, pros on the European Tour will be checked for illegal substances before they go out swinging. Players on the PGA Tour in the U.S. won’t be needled until 2009.
Suspicion of drug use has been aroused in recent months, especially after former champ Gary Player claimed that “at least 10 players and maybe more” were “on something” at this year’s British Open.
But dissension is already in the ranks. PGA people don’t want to include every item on the list from by the World Anti-Doping Agency - specifically human growth hormone. They argue that HGH testing is still a work in progress, and if you can’t find it, there’s no point in banning it.
