Poll: Does This Look Like a Touchdown To You?

Officials at Iowa-Indiana overturned the original touchdown call on this play today. IU then missed a FG on the next play.

IU leads 24-21 early in the 4th after a 92-yard TD pass by Iowa with 13:03 to go.

UPDATE: 28-24 Iowa after 66-yard TD pass by the Hawkeyes. Those two scores came on back-to-back plays!

Iowa romps to 42-24 win. I want to believe that someone spiked IU’s Gatorade with Ancient Age in the second half.

No other way to explain what happened.

Even though his toe is still inbounds at this point, he is not in control of the ball! By the time the receiver will be in control, he will be out of bounds. Tough break for IU.

too bad those nice cutters glvoes didnt help him maintain control of the ball! it was ACTUALLY a ballsy call by officials to review it - and they were actually right about something, like so many officials are not.

The 2:1 vote has to be because people are looking at the toe, not at his hands. It’s pretty obvious that he doesn’t have control of the ball. In real time, it really doesn’t look like a TD. Bad call that got righted through instant replay.

The call was the right call on the field, and the fact that we are still talking about a call which was ruled a TD on the field and overturned by replay when we still can’t can 100% for sure just goes to show you can’t overrule the call.

Indiana got robbed on that call and multiple times later when they kept getting called for holding, when they had not been called for holding but maybe once all game.

It’s not the bad calls so much it’s when they happen.

The fact that everyone is disputing the review tells you that the replay booth didn’t have indisputable evidence and they shouldn’t have overturned the call. Not to mention the ref on the field has 5 ft from the play and since the replay was inconclusive at best they are supposed to give the benefit of the doubt.

Are you kidding me? Get a different picture, he doesn’t have control of the football so this pic means nothing. And for the holding calls, Indiana was holding all game. And yes I did see the hawks not get called for two holds but indiana was constantly holding. Indiana lost, deal with it.

Show the next frame where there is space between his hands and the ball and brings it to his chest.

Anyone who says that they can tell that the receiver has a) control of the ball and b) a foot in bounds is delusional. (go online and look up “confirmation bias”)

As a few people pointed out…there is NOTHING in the replay or the picture that is indisputable video evidence to overturn that call.

It is one thing to miss a call on the field, but to have the cajones to watch that replay and KNOW you saw the foot out of bounds is insanity.

I can understand why Indiana fans are apoplectic

Only a douchebag would say that wasn’t a touchdown. I was sitting with Iowa fans and they knew it was a touchdown.

The ref who called the touchdown was all of five or six feet away from it.

The replay official in this game MUST BE FIRED if the Big 10 is to maintain any dignity.

the call was overturned because by the time he had control of the ball he was out of bounds, nothing to do with his feet, if you all recall the referee said the pass was incomplete, not he was out of bounds.

the problem is it was overturned on replay. it was called a TD on the field. No matter what anyone says, there is no way you could call the replay, this picture indisputable/irrefutable evidence to overturn. Indiana could not overcome bad call after bad call, and the wheels finally came off in 4th quarter, where they should have already been up by much more than they were.

I bet my iowa fan friend there would be suspension as a result of this game.

    I will say two things about this photo;

    1. I see daylight between his hand and the ball. With that said it was a touchdown because if you watch the live video his foot dragged on the ground. In HD you could see the grass change color as his foot dragged accoss it.

    2. being a Hawkeye fan I would agree that this call cost the Hoosiers the game if the Hawks did win by 18 points. Thats 3 possesions, a far cry from from say 6 points.

From the picture I alone I can’t say it’s a touchdown. where is the video. The guy doesn’t even have control of the ball yet.

People are voting on this picture ? Seriously? His right hand isn’t even on the ball yet. Any pictures with control of the ball to see if there is a foot inbounds?

If anybody saw the game or re-watches this on their Tivo, watch the moment right when he lands on the ground. Initially, in this photograph, he did make a catch. When his back hits the ground, the ball comes loose and rolls slightly down his chest. He is out of bounds then and did not have complete possession of the ball. It was extremely lucky for Iowa, but it was a good call with indisputable evidence.

Ruling on the field was touchdown. The mere fact that people can’t agree means the video evidence is not indisputable. Shouldn’t have been overturned. This turn of events took all the wind out of Indiana’s sails and let Iowa back into the game.

It doesn’t matter if “people” don’t agree. Some people still think the world is flat, so “people” can’t agree on that. There is indisputable evidence to the replay official, reviewing video feeds from several angles, that the receiver touched down out of bounds before gaining control of the ball.

Not only does the receiver not have control of the ball, but you can see the white line under his foot, which means his toe is not touching the ground at this point. There is no doubt that his momentum carried him OB before the foot actually touched, and it’s really not hard to see how the replay official was able to discern that.

I based my vote on what I saw on TV replays - no clear evidence to overturn the call on the field. This photo tells you nothing on its own.

As a Hawkeyes fan, I was only hoping the Hawks would win this game by a large enough margin to make this bad call irrelevant. In my opinion, they did that. Still, a horrible call that went the way of the Hawks(No way was there evidence to overturn the call on the field) and it wasn’t the only one.

Momentum is a powerful thing in college football. Nobody knows what could have happened afterward if it had been a touchdown. Basically, if you think that Iowa would have won anyways because they scored more touchdowns in the end then you should keep watching your favorite show, The View, and never watch college football again.

Good teams overcome adversity. Bad teams whine about adversity.

BTW, not a catch. anyone who claims as much by looking at the photo if fooling themselves.

what a horrible picture to use. publish a picture where he has control of the ball so people can accurately form an opinion.

Yeah I would like to see where his toes are at when he actually has control of the ball. From the picture it looks like his momentum would most likely lift his toes off of the turf by the time he brings the ball to his chest. Picture must be from a Hoosier fan.

Even if IU scores there, and that lucky interception by Iowa’s safety never happens, Iowa still would have won the game by a score of 35-28.

IU seems to be the opposite of Iowa, they start every game pretty well and choke the game away at the end.

Look at this video. It may look like the toe is touching in this picture but he is not in possession of the ball. Take a look at it a few frames later in this video. The funny thing is you hear Lou “eagle eye” Holtz saying his toe is touching but his foot is parallel to the ground, there is a gap and you see a shadow of his foot.

It was a TD. You could see the field turf particles flying in the air from when his foot dragged.

I have watched the replay MANY times in brilliant HiDef on a 62″ screen. There were NO “particles” flying into the air from his foot before the ones that flew from hitting out of bounds. Check it out and you’ll see!

Now I know why this was indisputable. He hadn’t caught the ball yet even if his foot was on the ground. Good call by the replay official. Thanks for the picture.
