Police Charge Akron Player With Attempted Murder

University of Akron basketball transfer Rydell Brooks, 20, has been arrested in Akron, OH, and charged with attempted murder (among other charges) for allegedly sprinting away from police after a traffic stop and firing shots at the officers attempting to detain him. Edward J. Davis Jr., 20, also ran from the car and was arrested.

Brooks transferred to the University of Akron after a year at Niagara University, where he played in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. He sat out last season and would be eligible to play for the University of Akron this season, pending the outcome of the charges.

Reached for comment, Brooks’ former high school coach stated that he told Brooks to stay at Niagara and not to come back home to Akron. However, he chose to move back to be closer to his two-year-old daughter and his grandmother who raised him.

His grandmother told WKYC, “I know when he talked to my daughter, he made sure to tell her ‘Tell mom, I’m alright ’cause it didn’t happen. He said it’s a mistake.”
