Phillips On STL: ‘They’re Little Bitches, All Of ‘Em’

Hal McCoy of the DAYTON DAILY NEWS has Brandon Phillips of the Reds saying this about the St. Louis Cardinals before the first game of Cincy’s three-game set against the Redbirds last night:

Tony LaRussa

I’d play against these guys with one leg. We have to beat these guys. I hate the Cardinals. All they do is bitch and moan about everything, all of them, they’re little bitches, all of ‘em. I really hate the Cardinals. Compared to the Cardinals, I love the Chicago Cubs. Let me make this clear - I hate the Cardinals.”

Seeing as he “knows how to f—ing manage,” Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa took the high road and declined to dignify Phillips’ absurd comments with a response.

Oh, wait.

LaRussa to McCoy responding to what Phillips said:

“We win the right way and we lose the right way. We’ve received a lot of compliments over the years that when we lose we tip our caps and when we win we keep our mouths shut, that’s my comment.”

“I don’t think that will go over well in his own clubhouse. Phillips is ripping his teammates - Scott Rolen, Miguel Cairo, Russ Springer, Jim Edmonds - all the ex-Cardinals over there. He isn’t talking about this year. He is talking about the way we’ve always played and those guys are old Cardinals. Tell him he’s ripping his own teammates because they are all old Cardinals.”

So what got Phillips all worked up, causing him to suddenly forget that he played for the Reds? McCoy:

More likely, Phillips was talking about a couple of incidents where LaRussa and pitching coach Dave Duncan complained about baseballs in Great American Ball Park being too slick because they weren’t rubbed up properly or the time they complained about something on pitcher Bronson Arroyo’s hat.

Though the Reds lost 7-3 last night to LaRussa’s Cardinals, Phillips and the Redlegs gained more new fans than they’ll ever know thanks to his comments.
