PGA Tour Pins TV Success on Tiger\’s Trail

The good people at THE ORLANDO SENTINEL have made their submission to the worst-headline-of-the-week contest with this gem: Tiger Controls Ratings.

Who’d have figured, right?

In other news, the paper reports that Red Grange has committed to teh University of Illinois, the Yankees are high on this Mickey Mantle kid and Wilt Chamberlain digs women.

The story itself, by the way, isn’t half bad.

Citing figures provided by SPORTS BUSINESS DAILY, the Sentinel notes “Tiger skipped five tournaments in 2006 in which he made the cut in 2005: the Mercedes Championship, Wachovia Championship, Memorial, Buick Championship and Tour Championship. Weekend ratings dropped an average of 55 percent for those tournaments in ‘06. In 11 non-major events that Woods played on Sunday in 2006, ratings averaged 3.5. That compared with 1.6 for events he did not compete in, or a decrease of 119 percent.”

Apparently, viewers haven’t been drawn to the set as much by this …

or, this ….
