PEYTON BACKING EX-VOLS TEAMMATE HELTON IN SERIES: Todd Helton has finally made it to the World Series, and has Peyton Manning to thank.
The Colorado Rockies first baseman has a big fan in Indy, as the Colts QB is cheering on his old college teammate to win the World Series.
GO VOLS EXTRA provides photogenic proof of Manning & Helton’s time together on the Tennessee sidelines. In this 1994 snapshot of the Vols’ QB crew, Todd is on the far left, while Peyton stands on the far right. (Bet Phil Fulmer wishes he had these guys back in uniform.)
Back in his Knoxville days, Helton was a two-sport star in both baseball and football. In fact, Helton was ahead on Manning on the depth chart, and he got to start under center before Archie’s son.
But after three games, Todd got injured and Peyton quickly stepped into his place. Manning went on to pigskin glory, while Helton, seeing he wasn’t going to get his job back anytime soon, headed back to the ol’ horsehide.
So, it also appears that Peyton has Todd to thank for his Super Bowl glory. If Helton & the Rox manage to sock the Sox, Manning can steer his friend to a good ring fitter.
