USC Trojans head coach Pete Carroll and running backs coach Todd McNair will “most likely” be called as witnesses in the ongoing Reggie Bush civil suit.
The suit is being brought about by a would-be agent who claimed to have given the former USC running back $300,000 in cash and gifts. No word on whether those gifts included a white Ford Bronco or poorly-fitting gloves.
Back to the LA TIMES we go, this time to David Wharton and Gary Klein:
Carroll was linked to the case after Lake alleged that he overheard a telephone conversation between the coach and Bush’s stepfather. Carroll could not be reached Friday.
Lake also claimed to have met McNair on several occasions while Bush was at USC. McNair has previously said he was not aware of any alleged wrongdoing. Friday, he declined to comment.
Both coaches have spoken to NCAA investigators who want to know if Bush and his family accepted improper benefits and, just as important, if USC knew.
It’s ironic to me that Bush, now with the New Orleans Saints, and his supposed circumventing of the amateur athletic system has drawn so little interest from sports fans. It’s similar to the supposed “Katrina Fatigue” that many Americans felt after the news barrage of the aftermath of that hurricane that ran through that area.
Is it because most people assume all good college football players are getting paid (or should be?) Or is it another over-hyped college athlete that people have grown tired of hearing about? Or maybe there’s another prominent Bush that’s a much better target for America’s ire.
