Iowa Prep Baseball: A Whole Lotta Zeroes Goin On

So the Pittsburgh Pirates select Norwalk High (Des Moines, Iowa) pitcher Matt Dermody in the 26th round of the MLB draft, and tell the senior lefty that they will sign him, but won’t quote any numbers until they “see him pitch during the summer.” This may not have been wise.

Matt Dermody

Dermody threw a 6-inning perfect game on Tuesday, striking out all 18 batters he faced, as Norwalk beat South Tama 10-0 (game was stopped due to the mercy rule). Oh, and he also had two home runs. In the second game of the doubleheader, Norwalk teammate Kole Klocko threw a five-inning no-hitter as Norwalk again beat South Tama 10-0. You’ll get nothing and like it!

From the DES MOINES REGISTER:

Norwalk coach Chad Weidmann said it was the first no-hitter for both pitchers.

“I have never seen that before,” Weidmann said Tuesday of the back-to-back feats. “As far as the majestic of last night, it was very thrilling.”

By the time Norwalk gained its sweep, more baseball history was being made in central Iowa.

Gilbert and North Polk were engaged in a strikeout fest that lasted 14 innings — ending with records for most strikeouts by one team and most in a combined game. Joe Goodman and Joe Stoker combined for a record 30 strikeouts for Gilbert during its 5-3 victory. That topped the former record of 24 by Cris Schoon of Anamosa in an 11-inning game June 8, 1977, against Valley of Elgin.
