Pennant Chase - Utley Powers Phillies To Victory

Your first victors of the 2008 MLB Posteason - the Philadelphia Phillies. And it was all thanks to Chase Utley’s bat & Mike Cameron’s glove.

Chase Utley Mike Cameron

Game 1 of the Phillies-Brewers series started out as a quick but deadlocked affair. Cole Hamels did his part keeping Milwaukee off the scoreboard, while Yovani Gallardo flummoxed Philly. But it all changed in the bottom of the 3rd.

Phils batter Carlos Ruiz started things off with a single, then Hamels reached base on an error by Richie Weeks. But Gallardo almost got out of the jam by getting the next two batters out.

However, Utley came up to bat & knocked one deep into center. Cameron tried to make a Willie Mays-Jim Edmonds behind-the-back catch, but the ball dropped out of his glove. Ruiz & Hamels scored, then Utley eventually came home on a bases-loaded walk. 3-0, Phillies.

Yet Utley almost went from hero to goat in the 9th inning, when he produced his own error in that allowed Ray Durham to finally get the Brewers on the board. Luckily for him, Brad Lidge righted the Phillies pitching ship and closed out the game with a 3-1 final.

Game 2 is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET Thursday at Citizens Bank Ballpark. (Unless the government steps in and buys the bank’s assets. Look what happened to Washington Mutual.)
