Forget the fact that he couldn’t win a championship until the Basketball Gods came down and delivered him Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to play with - Paul Pierce still believes he is the “best player in the world“.
(See? Told you MS Paint was as effective as Photoshop)
At least, that’s the level of cockiness the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER wants you to believe with their headline of “Pierce: ‘I’m the best player in the world’”. The actual story is a little less controversial.
It goes a little somethin’ like this: A Spanish publication asked Pierce if he believes that Kobe Bryant is the “best player in the world”. Pierce responded “No” indicating that he felt himself the “best player”.
What exactly are you supposed to say in response to a silly question like that? “Yes, actually I do feel he’s the best player in the world. He’s so much better than me in every way, in fact, that I have to go and massage his bunions to make sure he doesn’t lose his talent.”
THE REGISTER digs deeper and tries to get Pierce to bury himself:
On Thursday, Pierce stood by his comments, saying he is entitled to his opinion.
“That’s what I said. I am a confident player and a lot of people might look at it like ‘Oh, another cocky attitude,’ but I don’t look at it that way,” said Pierce, who is in town for his annual youth basketball camp at Hangar Athletic Xchange.
“I have an opinion, I have a right to have one and that’s the way I feel. I felt I’ve played against the best over the years and felt right now that I’m the best player in the world.”
Ooooh! Look at that arrogant Pierce go! That’s bound to rile up the rest of the NBA, and maybe even the youngsters at the youth camp, who will then rise up against the cocky Pierce and take the over, Ernest Goes to Camp-style!
All sarcasm aside, the paper did pick up this juicy taunting nugget from Pierce during their muckraking:
“I think they will be a great team next year. Maybe we’ll see them back in the Finals.”
