Panthers Suspend Star WR Smith For Two Games

Managers of keeper leagues around the world woke up to some bad news this morning: The number 1 WR is all of fantasy sports, Steve Smith, has been suspended for the first two games of the year.

The suspension comes as punishment for yesterday’s TKO of Panthers cornerback Ken Lucas during the team’s second practice (Practice?!?!) of the day. That’s certainly one way to sabotage your team’s chances right out of the gate.

The great thing about this story are the details of the fight itself. From the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER:

Smith and Lucas were debating a practice play on the sidelines when Smith punched Lucas while Lucas was on one knee. Numerous teammates and coaches converged on the scene to try to break up the melee. Eventually, linebacker Jon Beason pulled Smith away from Lucas.

Lucas was later taken to a tent and an ice pack was placed on the left side of his face and left eye. Smith walked over, accompanied by Muhsin Muhammad, to apologize, but the damage was done.

Smith sucker-punched Lucas while he down on one knee?!?! Dude’s got some issues to deal with, maybe with another bout of anger management. You can’t like that if you have him on your fantasy team; Smith always plays better with a chip on his shoulder.

The final result of the brouhaha: One broken nose, one team’s season (don’t tell me having Muhsin Muhammad and D.J. Hackett as your starting pair isn’t going to hurt) and $205,882, the pro-rated portion of Smith’s $1.75 million annual salary covering two games. That’s completely worth it if we can finally get some video of the fight.
