Padres Owner Gives Up Box Use In Divorce Deal

San Diego Padres owner John Moores is going through a messy divorce. As with any marriage dissolution, the assets of each party inevitably get divided in half between the two. That would explain why John hasn’t been seen in his luxury box for most of the season - because soon-to-be ex-wife Becky has been occupying it.

Becky & John Moores Padres owners

The SAN DIEGO UNION TRIBUNE reports explains that it would actually John’s idea to give Becky “exclusive access” to the suite for the first half of the season. His reasoning was that it would “minimize confrontation” between the two. (Plu, he wouldn’t have to sit through a good portion of the Padres’ lousy season this year.)

But now John wants his box back, but Becky isn’t giving it up without a fight:

Effective July 28, John Moores “unilaterally excluded (Becky Moores) from utilizing the owner’s box,” according to a filing by Becky Moores’ attorney, Sandra Morris. As a result, Becky Moores sought relief from the court July 30 for allocation of the box. Judge Lisa Foster denied that request because it was “not an emergency.” A hearing on the matter was set for October.

John’s lawyer Robert Nachshin argues that his client needs access to his own suite again “in effort to preserve the parties’ largest community asset – the Padres – and promote the business of the Padres.”

Besides the luxury box brouhaha, the real bone of contention in this divorce is who ends up with final control over the Padres - John or Becky. We’re guessing the loser gets the club.

Whatever happens, Red Sox owner John Henry better take heed.
