As the New York Yankees pay a visit to the Chicago White Sox this week, Ozzie Guillen was asked if he could ever see himself working in pinstripes under the iron fist of Hank Steinbrenner.
Mark Gonzales of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE posed the possibility to the outspoken manager of ever having to answer to the outspoken owner.
Guillen replies in the negative, as he knows what it’ll be like:
“I don’t know if I’ll ever manage that club because there are going to be two tigers in the same cage.”
And Ozzie claws up reasons why Hank’s style wouldn’t suit him:
“Whoever is wearing that [Yankees] uniform has to be aware where they come from. [Steinbrenner] has the way to push his players. This man has the way to say stuff to make his players better. He may throw people under the bus.
Hey, he made the money and they pay a lot of money, he has the right to say whatever he wants about his ballclub. And everyone has an opinion, and that’s his opinion.”
And if there’s anyone who knows a thing about strong opinions, it’s Ozzie.
Even if for some reason Joe Girardi doesn’t work out (like the players rebelling over the clubhouse ice cream ban), Guillen has no sights set the Bronx, saying he’s happy where he’s at - very happy:
“Thank God Jerry Reinsdorf is my owner. And besides my owner, he’s my father. He’s one of the best friends of my life. Steinbrenner is just being Steinbrenner, and that’s what he is … The owner here is always protecting my [rear].”
We’re pretty confident Ozzie didn’t say “derriere” or “behind“. And we’d never thought we would ever hear the words “Thank God Jerry Reinsdorf is my owner” spoken without serious tinges of sarcasm.
