Bartolo Colon is still scheduled to pitch in a rehab assignment tonight for the White Sox Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte, but there’s a problem. No one’s still quite sure he’s going to show up. Colon was completely AWOL until late Tuesday, when the White Sox said that they finally got in touch with him. What’s going on with the big man, who’s supposed to be back on the big club by July 24 — if he gets his rehab work in. Manager Ozzie Guillen thinks he knows what the problem is.
In a report by the CHICAGO TRIBUNE today, Guillen said that he thinks Colon might be emotionally scarred by the death of Michael Jackson. Oh Ozzie, you old bull****er. Um, you are kidding, right? Ozzie …?
“I worry about Colon because Colon was a big-time Michael Jackson fan,” Guillen said. “He might [watch] the TV and cry all day long. Maybe he is in L.A. at his funeral, because I can’t find him. When he gets to Charlotte, Oney (Guillen’s son) will call me to say he’s there.
“Nobody knows how big of a Jackson fan Colon was. I’m serious. He might be depressed a little bit.”
Perhaps it was Magic Johnson’s stirring eulogy that pushed Colon over the top. Anyway, Colon’s agent said he would pitch tonight, when the Knights meet the Norfolk Tides at 7:15 p.m. at Knights Stadium. According to their web site, though, here’s the scheduled pitching matchup.
Norfolk: Troy Patton 1-2, 4.43
Charlotte: Carlos Torres 8-4, 2.30
