Oregon Ducks Looking To Play Football Game In China

PEKING DUCKS? U OF OREGON LOOKING TO PLAY IN CHINA: Just as the NFL has gone international by holding games in Mexico and London, the college boys are looking to do the same:

Oregon Ducks Chinese soldiers

The PORTLAND OREGONIAN reports the University of Oregon is working to schedule the first-ever U.S. college football game in China. With the NCAA’s blessing, the Ducks are in the planning stages to face Boise State in 2009 - the year after the Beijing Olympics.

UO director of football operations Jim Hawkins first pitched the idea to coach Mike Belotti last fall. Now the two will meet in November with the school’s international affairs vice-provost and a sports marketing firm to figure out just how to do it - presumably over a dinner of orange chicken and beef chow mein.

Ducks football

The Ducks hope to beat the NFL and MLB to the Land of Mao & Yao. The NBA already arrived in 2004, holding exhibition games in Beijing and Shanghai. A planned Patriots-Seahawks matchup was nixed, while the baseball players’ union wasn’t too thrilled about having to hit home runs over the Great Wall.

But many logistical nightmares still await. Oregon has no contract with Boise State to have the game in China. No permission has been granted to play by the Chinese government. And most importantly - who’s going to foot the (Duck) bill?

And if the Broncos are involved, Chinese leaders certainly wouldn’t want to see any Statue of Liberty plays.

Joey Harrington billboard

Yet, it’s not the first outrageous idea flown about by the Quack Attack. Back in 2001, the school rented a giant billboard in NYC to promote Joey Harrington for the Heisman. And we know how well that turned out.
