Hey, A’s fans! Don’t forget to show up a little early for tomorrow’s 12:35 p.m. game against the Royals - ’cause it’s MUG Root Beer Float Day! For the past eight seasons, Oakland’s AL club has scheduled a day to serve up the frosty treats - complete with $15 commemorative mug ($25 for one with a Mark Ellis autograph) - to raise money for a worthy charity.
And this year’s beneficiaries of the selling of the sweet treats? The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, of course.
What better way to show support for diabetic children than by slurping up a delicious beverage they would so desperately love to enjoy, yet could kill them if they did.
But just look at all the celebrity scoopers scheduled to be on hand: Rickey Henderson, The Oakland Raiderettes, The Golden State Warrior Girls, The San Jose SaberKittens, a couple of people from “The Real World: Denver”, and many more. What a cavalcade of scooping stardom!
We’re guessing future A’s fundraisers will include Burger King Double Whopper Day to benefit the American Heart Association, and Marlboro Cigarette Day for the American Cancer Society.

“What better way to show support for diabetic children than by slurping up a delicious beverage they would so desperately love to enjoy, yet could kill them if they did.”
How’s that, exactly? Just like non-diabetics use insulin to process glucose (sugar), so does my type 1 diabetic child. Except I have to inject the insulin into her. So far, so good. I’m not planning on picking out burial plots just yet, and she eats ice cream almost every night. Imagine that!

This is quite possibly one of the stupidest comments I’ve ever heard. MY type 1 diabetic child can have a root beer float if he would like, I just have to adjust his insulin accordingly..

I wanted to thank you for doing the story on this fundraiser. HOWEVER, this treat will NOT kill a diabetic child. Diabetic children eat the same things you and I eat, they just need insulin becaue their pancreas cannot produce it any longer. A station in Indy has picked this story up and is now giving the appearance that this is “funny” when it’s just plain misinformation. Our Type1 Diabetic (aka Juvenile Diabetic) child tries to live as normal of a life as the rest of us. Perpetuating this idea that sugar can KILL diabetics (no matter what type)..is just wrong.

WOW, how miss informated can you be? a rootbeer float killing a diabetic child? how would that happen? the ONLY difference between a type 1 diabetic child and a child that didn’t have diabetes, is that their body won’t make the insulin on its own, so it has to be given to them either by injection or through an insulin pump.
That has to be dumbest, most uneducated statement I’ve heard in a long time.
I bet the A’s would be glad to here that you are bashing their funraiser.. at least THEY are adding to the cummunity in a postive way, while your just poluting the air with your garbage!

I also want to thank you doing the story on the fundraiser. BUT you really must get your information correct. A root beer float will NOT kill my diabetic child. Children with type 1 diabetes eat the same foods you and I do. They need to take insulin by injection or pump to cover the carbs that they have consumed, whether they are from root beer floats or an apple. Our children’s disease is an autoimmune disease. Their bodies destroyed the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. Therefore they must receive insulin via syringe or pump in order for their bodies to use the glucose properly. Please research before you make such comments. The type 1 diabetes community is always educating because too many people assume the same thing you did. It is a constant battle to educate. Our children deal with enough with the finger sticks many times a day, injections or site changes without the uninformed, inaccurate and rude comments that people make. Please update your article ASAP.
