I had no idea what “hyphy” music is (maybe Shaq’s alleged ex knows something about it), but apparently it’s the latest underground hip-hop craze in the Bay Area. It has its own subculture of music, slang and dance moves including doing something called “Go Dumb.” YOUTH RADIO has a report on the movement, and has some amazing footage of Oakland Athletics mascot Stomper going dumb.
Video of Stomper gettin’ down with the Oaktown crew is after the jump.
Yes, you can officially feel out of touch with youth culture: a baseball’s team elephant mascot knows more about the latest crazes than you do. I have to say, Stompy has some moves on him: given his name, I’d have pegged him more as a crunker, but I guess I was wrong.
Let’s see: Oakland A’s employee…has some fly dance moves…if that elephant starts busting out some “2 Legit 2 Quit” hand symbols, we’ll know what finally happened to MC Hammer.
But seriously, this points out that sports teams are still a reflection of their communities. I don’t think you’re going to be seeing, say, the Pittsburgh Pirate busting out the latest underground dance moves anytime soon. Well, you might see some dancing from Steely McBeam, but only after hours during Beer Bust night at “The Velvet Glove.”
