Today’s headlines have been dominated by Manny, but there’s some weird stuff brewing down in Dallas, where a woman who is reportedly Dirk Nowitzki’s pregnant fiancée has been arrested on fraud charges. Cristal Taylor, who has used at least eight aliases while racking up what appears to be a number of bills that she had no intention of paying, was picked up by Dallas police at Nowitzki’s house on Wednesday morning on an outstanding warrant.
(Clearly, you can see why Dirk was so captivated by this woman)
And it appears that Dirk may have been involved in turning her in. Sources told CBS 11 in Dallas that a private investigator hired by Nowitzki accompanied the arresting officers, along with lawyers who were serving an eviction notice to her (she had been living at Dirk’s house for more than a year). She’s reportedly still in prison needing $20,000 to get bailed out, which is chump change for Dirk. But it doesn’t sound like he’s going to show up.
More strange details after the jump.
At first, it wasn’t clear exactly what king of relationship the woman had with Nowtizki when she was arrested. But CBS 11 reached Taylor’s “best friend,” who did just the kind of thing best friends do — dish about them to television reporters:
The friend says Nowitzki and Cristal Taylor were engaged–and that she is pregnant.
The friend, who wants to remain anonymous, says the two have been living together for over a year and he asked her to get married on New Year’s Eve.
The friend also says that Taylor has no idea if Nowitzki was involved in her getting arrested and claims that they had a stable, healthy relationship until Wednesday.
Another station in Dallas, WFAA, obtained video from a Facebook page that showed the two enjoying some time together in Nowitzki’s kitchen, and even taking some time to hug like a happy couple. So it appears that the notion that they are (were?) engaged is probably accurate.
The DALLAS MORNING NEWS says that the timing might seem bad, with the Mavs trying to focus on rallying from a 2-0 deficit against the Nuggets, but that some with the team thinks it’s good this happened now:
While many Mavericks fans probably regard the timing as awful, with Dallas trailing Denver 2-0 in the second round of the playoffs, the team sources characterized the news and timing as “good,” saying Taylor was a divisive influence between Nowitzki, his teammates and family members.
Nowitzki made this statement at practice in response to inquiries:
“It’s pretty obvious that I’m going through a tough time in my personal life right now,” said Nowitzki, 30. “Like I always have, I want to kind of keep my private life private.
“I really am not at the stage where I can talk about it yet and feel comfortable talking about it. I’m more than happy to answer basketball questions, but I think at this point, I just can’t talk about it.”
This is going to be a huge distraction for the Mavs, but Nowitzki was brilliant in the first two games (well, at least in the first half of each game) of the series, while his teammates (ahem, Jason Kidd) have been playing like the ones with something weighing on their minds.
It’s an interesting concept, though, that the situation could’ve actually been driving a wedge between Dirk and his teammates. Dirk supposedly asked Taylor to marry him on New Year’s Eve, but clearly had become suspicious enough of her in the ensuing months to hire someone to investigate her past.
As for the pregnancy part, that was reported by CBS 11 using the “best friend” source again. She says when Taylor took a urine sample at the Dallas County Jail she was told she was pregnant. But these reports seem to be unconfirmed at this time.
Much more on this to come, I’m sure.
