It’s a pretty big puncturing of pride to an NCAA Division I conference when the arena that holds your basketball conference tournament kicks you out over concerns of losing money.
But as the TRENTON TIMES reports, such a slap in the face has just happened to the MAAC. (Not to be confused with the MAC.) The Sovereign Bank Arena won’t welcome the conference into its building, passing on the opportunity to host the MAAC’s 2009 tourney.
The arena - well, not the actual arena, but the arena’s general manager - said a “potential low turnout” from “anticipating poor ticket sales” of the tourney weighed in on the decision to cut the conference tournament from its schedule.
Undeterred, the MAAC will move next year’s championship tourney back to the sunnier shores of Albany, NY. Still, Trenton mayor Douglas Palmer is sad to see they’re not coming:
“I’m very disappointed. The Sovereign Bank Arena is certainly an outstanding venue to host the MAAC games and show off our city, and help our local economy.”
Looks like the arena thought it wouldn’t be that big a help.
