Say all you want about Bill Bavasi's horrible mismanagement of the club.... the fact is that McLaren was as incompetent of an in-game manager as Buzzy Jr. was a general manager. Some of the decisions he made were as baffling as the trades Bavasi made.

There is also the issue with Sexson and Beltre coming off of steroids. That has really slowed down their bats.

The entire mess boils down to years of poor choices by the team's CEO Howard Lincoln. He forced himself into the job after being forced out as leader of Nintendo of America. His decisions there were as bad as his decisions as CEO of the Mariners. Nintendo was on the brink of bankruptcy under Lincoln's watch. Since he left they have created many good products and are now the industry leader once again (no big surprise there).

Linconln has continually surrounded himself with "yes men" and it is biting him in the butt (much like Buhner does to his ex-teammates during photo-ops).

When Sweet Lou asked for an extra hitter he was told to hit the road. When Pat Gillick made similar comments, he was also asked to leave. When Jeff Nelson questioned ownership on the same stuff, he was traded within 24 hours. When Mike Hargrove questioned Lincoln on the fact that he gave a long-term deal to Ichiro, he was also told to leave. The list goes on and on and on.

Out of 80 candidates for GM, Bill Bavasi was the best they could come up with? You've got to be kidding me. It was obvious that Bill said he'd do anything and everything Howard asked. A team with a half-billion dollar stadium and a payroll over $100 million couldn't come up with a better managerial candidate than John McLaren this past offseason?

McLaren was a .500 coach last year, but that totally glosses over the fact that the same team was about 15 games OVER .500 the week Hargrove left after his blowup with "The Yes Men". The team totally and completely collapsed under McLaren at the end of last season, but he said "yes" enough times to Lincoln that he got the job.

Pathetic. I'm glad to see him go. He couldn't manage a pitching staff or set up a decent batting order to save his life. Now if only Howard Lincoln would do the right thing and fire HIMSELF (and take that worthless pile Chuck Armstrong with you Howie).
