If the National Hockey League won’t decide on their Most Valuable Player, then the NHL Shop will.
JAPERS’ RINK skates over news from TSN that the league’s official merchandise store was selling shirts today honoring Alexander Ovechkin as this year’s Hart Trophy winner. There’s only one problem - the Capitals’ star hasn’t been officially chosen yet.
Ovechkin is one of three official finalists for the Hart, along with the Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin and the Flames’ Jarome Iginla - all who were nominated back in April. And the official announcement isn’t coming for another week, during the NHL Awards show on Thursday, June 12.
Alex is a pretty confident bet to handle the Hart, having led the league in goals & total points this season - but he might have some worries about this early sale being a jinx. (And if he does lose, at least the kids in Nicaragua have some new clothing to look forward to.)
Despite tempting fate, the Ovechkin shirt must have been a very popular item, as the NHL store is already out of stock. (OK, actually the store took the item down when they discovered the “e-commerce error”.)
Personally, we were hoping the Red Wings’ Henrik Zetterberg would still be in the Hart race. The trophy would be a nice complement to his Conn Smythe award.
And it would give us more excuses to show more Emma Andersson.
