Beer & football - two great tastes that go great together. And Rutgers is keeping the duo forever entwined by building their new football stadium on the site of an old tavern.
FOOTBALL STADIUM DIGEST drinks in news that the Scarlet Knights’ new gridiron locale has been discovered to be on the spot of the “legendary” Rising Sun Tavern.
The 18th-century watering hole was not only a good place to enjoy an ale, but also get a first-class education, as the Rising Sun was supposedly the first building to host classes for Rutgers students.
During an archeological dig at the stadium’s new site, excavators uncovered “thousands of ceramics, cutlery and bottles.” And the BERGEN RECORD cooks up the additional discovery of “clam shells on a bed of ash that may have been part of a clam bake.”
As stadium construction continues, school officials say that the old tavern area will be turned into a plaza complete with historical marker. We’ll drink to that!
For those who really “dig” excavations, MY CENTRAL JERSEY.COM shovels up some exciting video of the Rutgers site. Of course, this archeology video is much more thrilling:
