I thought inclusion without prejudice was the objective. NBC also didn't mention whether any of the female gymnasts were virgins; it's not relevant to the sport. He's obviously not the first gay Olympic medal winner - ie., Greg Louganis, so I don't believe it was an effort to hide the fact.
