EX-BOSOX PLAYER MANAGES TO GIVE BASE TO LUCKY FAN: As the baseball season slowly nears its end, it wouldn’t be complete without looking back at a classic minor league manager tantrum:

In honor of Boston winning the ALCS, we found video of former Red Sox player Butch Hobson throwing a fit earlier this year.
Hobson is the man in charge for the Nashua Pride, a team in the independent Can-Am League. His club was visiting the North Shore Spirit, and even though Butch soon became a rude guest, he did give a polite offering to one of his hosts.
Spirit batter Allen Mottram (any relation to Jamie & Chris?) had hit a drive to Nashua’s 2nd baseman, who threw to first. Although the Pride player bobbled the catch, the base umpire called Mottram out.
North Shore’s manager came out to argue with the ump, and asked him to check with the plate umpire. After a short discussion, the boys in blue changed their minds and declared Mottram safe.

About 2:15 into the video, Hobson comes out in a fighting mood. (Makes sense, since it was Army Night, and the Spirit players were wearing camouflage uniforms.) 45 seconds later, the ump’s heard enough, and tosses the Nashua skipper.
In reaction to his dismissal, Butch walks over and pulls out first base. But instead of tossing it, he puts his under his shoulder and starts heading off the field. Hobson opens a gate, walks up into the stands, and gives the base to a young fan - much to the cheers of the Spirit crowd.

But before the kid can race home and tack up his new souvenir on the bedroom wall, North Shore security comes by and takes the base back, dis-Spirit-ing the youngster and eliciting boos from the home field fans.
It might not be the same as a Mikulik metldown or Wellman grenade toss, but it’s certain to show up on SportsCenter’s Year-In-Review Special on December 31.
