Drew Brees has left New Orleans Saints training camp upon learning of the death of his 59-year-old mother, Mina.
The AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN reports that Mina had died in Colorado while visiting her son Reid, although the cause of her death is unknown at this time.
Although it is sad news for the Brees family, Drew & his mom weren’t always on the best of terms.
Mina, a well-known Austin attorney, had recently been subpoenaed by the Texas attorney general’s office over letters she sent out to various Austin & Houston restaurants, informing them they had lost the legal rights to use their business’ name, but she could help get them back for $25,000 each.
The only problem is that the restaurants never legally lost their name rights in the first place. As a result, investigations began of possible violations made by Mina under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act.
And Mina’s shady dealings also extended to her son, the Saints QB. In 2006, she used Drew’s likeness in her campaign ads when she was running for a spot on the state’s 3rd Court of Appeals. However, this was done without Drew’s consent, and he soon told her to take him out of her ads. He added that his relationship with his mother “had soured and was nonexistent.”
All this done by the same woman who won the Austin Bar Association’s 2005 professionalism award for legal ethics and professionalism.
Saints coach Sean Payton said he wasn’t sure when Drew would return to the team.
