Turns out Mike Martz’s stay on the unemployment line was a short one:
The SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE reports that the ex-Rams coach and ex-Lions assistant will be named the new offensive coordinator for the 49ers.
Martz was let go less than a week ago from the confines of Ford Field, but has been tabbed to make his magic at
Candlestick 3Com Monster Park. And Mike will have his work cut out for him, as the Niners ranked dead last in points scored and yards gained this season.
But is Martz the right fit for the 49ers?
NINER INSIDER notes that the team may need to get a bunch of new players to handle Martz’ pass-happy attack. While John Ryan of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS calls the pairing of Martz and head coach Mike Nolan “A match made in game-management hell.”
(Martz already knows how to dress for games at Candlestick Park)
But we know Martz will fit in fine in Frisco, based on what he said on his way out the Detroit door:
“I came here because of Rod.”
Of course, he was referring to Lions coach Rod Marinelli, but the phrase could be just as applicable toward his new San Fran location.
