Michigan May Have To Forfeit Penn State Win For Using Ineligible Player

WOLVERINE WOES CONTINUE WITH POSSIBLE PSU FORFEIT: It’s bad enough to lose to 1-AA Appalachian State. It’s even worse to get blown out by Oregon. And now Michigan might have to give up their only quality win of the season:

Joe Paterno Lloyd Carr

THE CLEVELAND LEADER punts us the news that the 3-2 Wolverines may have to forfeit their 14-9 defeat of then- 10th ranked Penn State for using an ineligible player.

Safety Artis Chambers actually hit the field in the first four games for the Maize & Blue. The freshman was okay to play under the NCAA’s guidelines, but apparently not under the Big Ten’s rules. So the Notre Dame triumph is safe, but the Nittany Lion victory is in jeopardy.

Michigan AD Bill Martin says it was a “misinterpretation of the Big Ten freshman eligibility rules,” and Chambers is now no longer part of the team. Martin further added, unlike everything else this year, Lloyd Carr was not to blame.

That didn’t stop the coach from taking the bull by the horns, as he declared to reporters, “I’m not going to get into that, other than to say it’s a real disappointment.”

Appalachian State 34-32

Just toss it on the pile with all the others, Lloyd.
