Looks like former MLB pitcher Matt Keough will be spending the holidays stuck behind bars:
USA TODAY reports that the ex-Athletics All-Star has been sitting in the Orange County Jail for the past few days, after his arrest for drinking in a Newport Beach hotel bar. The booze-up was in violation of his parole from an earlier drunk-driving conviction.
Known to some as the hubby of one of the “Real Housewives of Orange County”, Keough has spent the past couple of years fighting alcohol abuse. And his lawyer blames a spring-training incident for sending Matt down the road to drunkenness.
Back in 1992, Keough took a line drive to the head while sitting in the Angels’ dugout. The injury caused a blood clot in his brain that required emergency surgery.
Attorney Dan Grigsby says that the life-threatening event turned Keough toward the bottle: “He’s trying to quiet the demons as a result of the brain injury.
“I’ve known him since high school, and he hasn’t been the same since.”
In a 2006 interview, Keough admitted as much: “It may have escalated things, increased the progression of whatever was there. Brain trauma leads down that path. Any stress will do that to a drug addict or an alcoholic.
“Still, that’s not an excuse. I did it, it was stupid, that’s that.”
On Friday, Keough was ordered to remain held in jail without bail, and his scheduled arraignment was pushed back to January 14. Sadly, it appears Keough is back to his “stupid” ways.
At least he wasn’t mentioned in the Mitchell Report.
