Cycling has never really been my thing, but it’s hard to ignore a story out of Scranton, Pennsylvania about a guy who rode his bike from Maryland to Scranton for the sole purpose of meeting and having sex with a 15-year-old girl. He’s a regular Lance Armstrong, this guy. Just much, much creepier.
(I’m just assuming the guy’s bike looked like this)
26-year-old William Wagner’s “Tour de Statutory Assault” began in his hometown of Havre de Grace, Maryland, and continued 180 miles to a baseball field in Scranton. You might be shocked to learn that all of this was set up on MySpace. Wagner of course contends he thought the girl was 18.
All signs point to the contact between the two being consensual, but we all know that doesn’t matter in such a situation. The girl, whose name has not been published, might want to re-think getting into relationships with guys who have neither the wherewithall nor the money to go to Enterprise and rent a car for a couple of days. Either that, or Wagner’s just one of those exceedingly healthy perverts.
Here’s a map of the first and only stage of his journey. No word on whether or not he’s earned a yellow jersey for all of this:
The SCRANTON TIMES-TRIBUNE has some other details:
The teen told police in July she considered herself to be “in a relationship” with Mr. Wagner at one time, though he had originally told her he was 21. She also said he knew she was 15, according to court records.
She said he’d come to Scranton in June to meet her and they had intercourse at the Pine Brook baseball field, Sanderson Avenue and Green Place.
Police in Maryland interviewed Mr. Wagner, who allegedly admitted he’d come to Scranton and had sex with her. He said he stayed at the baseball field and never went to the teen’s house during the three days he was in Scranton. He also said he believed the girl was 18, according to court records.
I hope the field at least had a dugout. Wagner is being held on $50,000 bail, which he surprisingly hasn’t been able to pay. I’ve acquired a preliminary sketch of the man, so in case he gets loose you’ll know what to do:
