The Spanish Olympic basketball team committed a pretty big gaffe recently when they decided to have their picture taken while making their eyes look “slanty” (read: stereotypically Chinese).
People freaked out, society screamed “INJUSTICE, SIRS!”, the Spanish acted contritely apologetic, and then the world said “Awwwwww, silly racist Spaniards. Of course we forgive you.” But Adrian Wojnarowski of YAHOO! SPORTS has an interesting slant on the story, whereby Jason Kidd tells the world he will not stand for the racial injustices that are permeating our fair sports.
Actually, Jason just doesn’t think that what went down was fair.
“We would’ve been already thrown out of the Olympics,” he told Yahoo! Sports. “At least, we wouldn’t have been able to come back to the U.S. …There would be suspensions.”
And for his European peers, well, Kidd suggested, “They won’t do anything to them. It’s a double standard.”
To be perfectly honest, yeah, it is a double standard. And Kidd is right: if Americans had pulled this little stunt out at their photoshoot, the entire country would have lost it’s mind. And that’s just here at home; the Chinese probably wouldn’t have been too happy, either.
But this story, despite some initial heat, has blown over pretty quickly and that seems odd, since just because the Spanish are from Europe doesn’t mean they’re somehow less susceptible to being prejudice than us Americanos.
Of course, they’re also no less likely to end up dating May Anderson!
So maybe Kidd is just be angry/cranky because Anderson’s been rocking out until noon the next day with Lindsay Lohan (yeah, brah!), and now he’s single and in Beijing. Tough life, I know.
