Britton Colquitt, fourth in the line of FFOTVP (First Family of Tennessee Volunteer Punters), won’t be kicking in the first five games of 2008 and will have to pay for school out of his own pocket after getting popped for DUI when he hit a parked car over the weekend.
THE NASHVILLE TENNESSEAN reports the news, and more interestingly notes that this is far from Colquitt’s first incident — in fact, you can safely say this is a pattern, as the punter was suspended by coach Philip Fulmer in 2004 for “four alcohol related incident[s] in a six-month span,” including three underage drinking citations in 12 days.
Fulmer’s statement: “I’m very disappointed that Britton doesn’t appreciate the blessings he has been given from his family and his team. He will be required to undergo alcohol counseling as well as other internal punishments.”
Fulmer has a had a lot to deal with recently, with nine of his players either being arrested or dismissed from the team for violations of team rules. So why keep Colquitt on the team if he’s got a track record of this kind of recklessness with booze?
A punting average of 43.1 yards might have the most to do with it. But perhaps the fact that Colquitt’s family endows a scholarship at UT with a $100K contribution might also be factor?

Bad move by Fulmer and the Vols by allowing Colquitt to remain in school. He’s had enough chances and failed himself and the team too many times to deserve another chance.
