The LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER reports today the Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillispie has offered Michael Avery, an eight grader from L.A., a full scholarship which will begin with the 2012-13 season.

Like Tim Floyd’s USC sign last year, Avery is not physically imposing. Standing 6-4, Gillispie saw Avery “come off the bench” in two games at a Lebron James-sponsored camp recently.
The best part of the story though was the reaction from UK school president Lee T. Todd Jr.
When news of the commitment reached a meeting of the UK Athletics Association Board of Directors on Thursday, it stunned school President Lee T. Todd Jr.
“An eighth-grader?!” he blurted out.
After noting that plenty of time remained for such an early commitment to be rescinded, Todd expressed his wish that Kentucky not regularly seek a college choice from a child who had not yet entered high school.
Why do we think it might not be a bad idea for someone to start monitoring the Facebook and internet chatroom activites at the UK basketball offices?
