Kansas is expected to announce current Tulsa Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham as its new athletic director as soon as tomorrow according to a Big 12 athletic director who wished to remain anonymous.
Cunningham’s deal with Kansas has not been consummated but he recently met with the approval of the KU administration following a meeting with Kansas Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little this week.
As I reported last week, base annual pay for the position is expected to be $750,000.
Cunningham, who I first identified as a candidate for the job on November 14, has spent five years as Tulsa Athetic Director after working for three years in a similar capacity at Ball State.
Before Ball State, Cunningham worked in the Notre Dame athletic department business office for 13 years after obtaining his undergraduate degree and MBA from ND. He also played on the Irish tennis team.
Cunningham would replace Lew Perkins at Kansas, who exited a year early from his contract with the school amidst a federal investigation into a ticket scam allegedly run by five members of Perkins’ staff.
The general business practices of Perkins, who said the ticket investigation was the most embarrassing thing he’d experienced in his 40-year career, also had recently been called into question by the Kansas-area media before his abrupt retirement on September 7.
