Wooden & Scully Together Again: One Night Only!

John Wooden & Vin Scully don’t usually like being the center of attention (especially when John just wants to watch a UCLA game in peace). But for evening, the legendary Bruins basketball coach & the equally legendary Dodgers broadcaster will be sharing the stage to share stories of their many years in sports service.

“Scully & Wooden For The Kids” will be held June 13 at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles, with all proceeds going to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA.

And T.J. Simers says you’re welcome.

The LOS ANGELES TIMES columnist conceived the idea of bringing together two of L.A.’s … heck, two of the country’s most-respected sports figures to chat about their long & storied careers - all in the name of raising money to help children suffering from cancer.

T.J. talked with John, talked with Vin, and talked with AEG, the owners of the new downtown Nokia Theater. And they all told Simers the same thing - “Let’s do it.”

And so just like that, the Anschutz Empire makes available the 7,000-seat Nokia Theater L.A. Live at no charge — just so more money might go to the kids.

The firm of Roth, Leiweke & Anschutz also volunteers to pick up all expenses for the event, the cherry on top — throwing a fancy-schmancy dinner to thank sponsors who also might volunteer to help financially on such a memorable night.

Besides being adored by many SoCal sports fans, Wooden & Scully also have great mutual respect for each other. John says of the Dodger Stadium press box guru, “That voice is just as remarkable as it always has been.” Meanwhile, Vin tells the story of how he first met the Wizard of Westwood:

“I was living in a small apartment house in Brentwood and I had gone to the grocery store. I come back with my arms full, obviously a distressed husband, and there’s this little wooden fence. I get to it and this man steps out of nowhere to open the gate and save me.

“I say, ‘Thank you very much,’ and he says, ‘I’m John Wooden, UCLA basketball coach, and I say, ‘Oh, I’m so-and-so.’

“Now wouldn’t you know it,” Scully adds with a grin, “the first time I meet John and he’s helping someone — which really sums up his life.”

Wooden & Scully’s stage show should be quite memorable - especially for organizer Simers, who’ll also be emceeing the event.

Tickets for the show go on sale today (Wednesday). Prices will range from $25 to $200 per seat (plus whatever nefarious fees that evil Ticketmaster tacks on) .

But it should all be worth it. Coach Wooden, Vin Scully, helping kids kick cancer’s ass - what more could you ask for?

I’ve seen Coach Wooden speak within the last three years and I can vouch for the fact that even at his advanced age he is a amazing public speaker and just being in his presence is worth the price of admission.

If you have the opportunity to attend this event you need to go.
