Joe Paterno may be old, but he sure isn’t slowing down. (Just ask anyone driving around State College.) And once again, the 81-year-old Penn State coach proves how he can still pack a vocal punch.
Paterno was at the Radisson in the regal Pennsylvania town of King of Prussia, when he met with some members of the media. Things started friendly enough, as Joe asked, “What do you guys want to talk about?”
Well, they wanted to discuss other subjects besides X’s and O’s, such as the Nittany Lions’ latest brushes with the law, and Paterno’s own contract concerns. But it appeared that Joe’s sunny mood soon turned sour:
However, after too many queries of the off-the-field nature, Paterno decided to wrap up the tête-à-tête with the sort of screech he gives the student body whenever the program calls for a Rally in the Valley.
“I’m sick and tired of talking about this, that and the other thing, to be very frank with you,” Paterno said. “We got a tough schedule, a good football team, and we’re going to have a lot of fun and you guys all should be excited!”
Just to make his point, Paterno performed one more act of high theater:
He then slammed his fist down on the table. “Right?!” Paterno squealed.
Yeah, why are these reporters trying to do their jobs? Don’t they know that their incessant inquiring is distracting JoePa’s preparations for August 30, when his Lions face the mighty Division I-AA juggernaut that is Coastal Carolina? The nerve of some people.
In the meantime, this all should make for a great textbook chapter in Penn State’s newest communications course.
