SI DEVOLVES TRANSITIONS FROM VONNEGUT TO VACUOUS: SPORTS ILLUSTRATED reports in its latest issue that recently-passed author Kurt Vonnegut worked at SI in 1954 despite the fact that he “confessed to knowing next to nothing about sports.”

He knew “next to nothing about sports?” Amazing that that hiring philosophy at SI, at least when handing out precious bylines at the most revered sports journalism outlet in American history, still exists to this day.

Sadly, Vonnegut’s stay wasn’t long. One of his initial assignments was to caption a photo of a horse jumping a rail at Aqueduct race track.

Vonnegut wrote, “The horse jumped over the f—ing fence.” He then left the office, never to return.

No word if SI tried to convince him to stay. I seriously doubt it though, considering that at that time, silicon implants had yet to be invented.
