Jamie Moyer Pitching At 50 Increasingly Possible

When you win the World Series like the Phillies just did, you can get away with just about anything. Exhibit A? Signing Chan Ho Park. Exhibit B? Giving a two-year deal to a 46-year-old pitcher.

Jamie Moyer

(How old is Moyer? His rookie card came out when baseball cards were still cool. This, of course, is a 1987 Topps)

Of course, Jamie Moyer is no average 46-year-old pitcher (though there aren’t any others right now). Moyer is a Philly-area native who was instrumental in bringing the title to his hometown. And Moyer is one of the most durable pitchers in the game, even at his advanced age. I sometimes wonder if Mark Prior just sits at home silently watching Moyer, shaking his head at the absurdity of it all.

THE 700 LEVEL, home to some of the biggest Phillies fans out there, seem to be pleased with Moyer coming back on board:

Just heard it reported by 610 WIP’s Anthony Gargano that Jamie Moyer will return to the Phillies in 2009. A press conference is expected later this afternoon. We’ll update this post as information regarding the terms of the deal become available.

Moyer looked a bit shaky in the playoffs but came through with a solid performance in the World Series. His presence at the end of the rotation still makes me feel a little bit better about the starting five.

MLB.COM’s news release says that Moyer’s contract is for two years, but no financial terms were disclosed (though I imagine it’s for $10-12 million total). He made $6 million in 2008.

Moyer has thrown at least 196 innings in each of his last eight seasons. He’s 82-60 since turning 40.

MLB TRADE RUMORS says the Phillies are now done with their offseason moves after acquiring Raul Ibañez, Ronny Paulino, and Park, who was signed to a one-year, $2.5 million deal.

The Phillies had to sign him before the Yankees did.

16 wins in the regular season for a 46 year old.  I don't care what you guys say, the guy wins games.
