Daniela Werner of the Mobile (Ala.) Press-Register reports that JaMarcus Russell was arrested on Monday for possession of a controlled substance.
That controlled substance: codeine syrup.
A spokeswoman for the Mobile County Sherriff’s Department said police arrested Russell at his home as part of an undercover investigation. The ex-Raiders QB was booked into Mobile Metro Jail, but released minutes later after posting $2,500 bail.
According to Drugs.com:
“Codeine may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Codeine should never be given to another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction.”
Although JaMarcus hadn’t previously been accused of drug abuse, one Bay Area TV reporter missed another sports reporter’s joke about JaMarcus being treated for a “lethargy addiction“.
Russell is scheduled to appear in court on July 20, with a bond hearing set for this Wednesday. JaMarcus has been out of an NFL job since Oakland cut him last May.
