Well, East Carolina fans, I hope you enjoyed the ride. After climbing as high to No. 15 in the polls, the Pirates have finally fallen back to Earth after being upended by North Carolina State 30-24 in overtime this afternoon. Which just goes to show that you never know what will happen in a rivalry game.
(And yes, the ESPN announcers called the match-up a “rivalry game” several times. Sorry if I’m a bit of an elitist, but East Carolina vs. NC State isn’t exactly UNC vs. Duke.)
The victory was pretty surprising for the Wolfpack, especially since their last touchdown against a FBS was against Wake Forest - back in Nov. 17, 2007.
Combined with Fresno St.’s loss last week against Wisconsin, and all the talk of multiple non-BCS teams getting screwed out of a major bowl has kind of gone out the window. The only two non-BCS teams with a realistic shot to run the table are BYU and Utah, and one of them is going to take care of the other.
In other early game news: Terrelle Pryor had four touchdown passes in his first career start as Ohio State pulled away in the second half from Troy (not Smith) 28-10. Let the second guessing about Todd Boeckman starting against USC begin.
