Hoke’s ‘Ohio’ Abbreviation Subtle Poke at Rivals?

So far during his young tenure, new Michigan coach Brady Hoke has repeatedly taken to calling UM’s Columbus-based arch rival “Ohio” instead of the more customary “Ohio State.”

Having covered Ohio State football as a local, credentialed media member myself for several years, I can assure you that Hoke’s insistence on abbreviating The Ohio State University during press conferences and interviews, whether deliberate or not, is not going over well in Columbus.

And though his “State” embargo doesn’t extend to East Lansing, what else is Hoke supposed to call the Spartans?

UPDATE: It’s official. I talked to a UM athletic department staff member Thursday morning and was told that Hoke is indeed engaging in some gamesmanship with the Ohio “State” embargo.

Any comment about the tornados that rocked the state of Alabama today and killed more than 60 people? Or is football still paramount?

I think it is certainly a jab at tOSU. The problem is, here in Columbus and surrounding the people it’s ticking off the most are the Ohio University alum. They are already have a huge chip on their shoulders because…well because no one outside the alumni treats them as if they exist to begin with. (in terms of athletics) It’s like being a Jew on Christmas that lasts every day of the year.

I’m an Ohio State alum and fan and I really don’t care what Hoke calls OSU. I haven’t heard any outcry from this, even the local radio guys don’t care.

@Russ - It doesn’t tick off the Alumni. It ticks off the dump asses that don’t have a degree from OSU.

No one outside of Ohio even wants a degree from the overrated OSU.

That’s what OSU gets for having the false arrogance of putting “The” in front of their school’s name. Same holds true for the dipwads at University of Texas and other such arrogant schools.

If it upsets the fans so much they should petition the marching band to perform script Ohio State rather than simply script Ohio.

I’ve heard the stuff about OU people being pissed as well. If they’re so upset about it, win some games.

Iowa State doesn’t spell out “I-O-W-A”, Michigan State doesn’t yell out “Michigan!”, so why do the Buckeyes cheer for a MAC school?

Nothing coming from TSUN is annoying. In order to be annoying you have to actually be relevant. TSUN is not

Funny OS fans ranting about this but not their cheating, lying football coach. Way to divert attention!
