As you alluded to, injury certainly plays a factor. In my years playing baseball, I'd hook slide a lot or slide feet first. I rarely dove head first unless it was back to the base of course, but it's definitely faster that way... except to first base as you said. That drives me absolutely apeshit when major leaguers do it. As Steve Stone always said, if it were faster that way, olympic sprinters would do it. I'm a Cubs fan and watched the idiotic Ronny Cedeno did that last week. Sure enough he was out, and sure enough he hurt his shoulder. Dumbass. Great stuff.
