One can’t categorize this as another case of golf rage, because it appears that former NFL wide receiver Hassan Jones would have seized anything handy to use it as a weapon in this sad and unfortunate episode. Jones was arrested Monday on charges of aggravated assault and felony battery, which included waving a golf club at his wife and daughter.
As you might recall, the 6-foot 2, 235-pound Jones had played for the Florida State Seminoles & Minnesota Vikings. And one has to give props to the ST. PETERSBURG TIMES for diving headlong into the reporting on this one; it even named the type of club that he used during his berserk attack:
Jones, 45, of 2885 Sarah Drive, Clearwater, was charged with aggravated assault and felony battery. He was being held without bond because the charges are domestic in nature. Arrest affidavits say he armed himself with a Callaway Big Bertha driver and started swinging it at his daughter and wife, screaming that he was going to strike them in the head with the golf club. He also hit the walls around them as he made his threats, jail affidavits say.
He is also accused of grabbing his adult daughter by her left arm, pulling her out of her vehicle, and dragging her across some concrete while she was on her knees, the affidavits say. Jones then sat on top of her and held her by her throat until his wife knocked him off her, the affidavits say.
Apparently Mr. Jones did not keep his head on a swivel. It’s not his first run-in with the law - in 2006 he was charged with drunken driving, and in 1996 pleaded no contest to a domestic battery charge. In 1992, he was also charged with carrying a concealed weapon when a handgun was found in his carry-on luggage at the Tampa Airport.
Callaway Clubs - better loft, better distance, better random drywall destruction since 1938.
