Tropical Storm Hanna is playing havoc with the US Open schedule today. In an unprecedented move, they had both semifinals going at once, with the Andy Murray vs. Rafael Nadal match moved earlier and to Louis Armstrong Stadium in a bid to beat impending rain storms. It didn’t work, as play was halted for the day in the third set.
It’s a break that Nadal must love, as he is down two sets to none to the surging Brit, although he is up 3-2 in the third. And while Murray is a compelling young player, CBS and the tennis world is hopig for a Nadal rally, as Roger Federer set up his half of a Wimbledon rematch by taking out Novak Djokovic in four sets.
You might remember Federer: Four-time defending champion of the tournament. No. 2 player in the world. Does those weird, vaguely European commercials with Tiger Woods. Ring a bell?
Organizers have announced that the match will resume tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern. Following that is the women’s final (scheduled for tonight) between Serena Williams and Jelana Jankovic. The men’s final is moved to Monday. This all might be a thing of the past if the retractable roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium gets built soon.
I don’t see why they can’t play in the rain? They can’t make tennis balls that are water-resistant? And with the latest in shoe technology, they can’t come up with the sneaker version of “rain slicks”? At the very least, let’s get the women’s final out there and see what happens in the rain. And ladies: white shirts, please - thin, white shirts.
