Hank: “Alcohol And Hot Dogs” Once Fueled MLB?

We’ve been enjoying the reax from Alex Rodriguez’ wagon circlers after Jose Canseco accused him of being interested in acquiring steroids. Hank Steinbrenner’s defense of Rodriguez to the BERGEN RECORD left us chuckling (and hungry and thirsty):

“Consider the source, that’s No. 1,” Steinbrenner said of Canseco. “He wouldn’t have been able to hit the ball out of the infield without steroids.

Hank Steinbrenner

“And No. 2, if Mantle or Ruth were playing today, with the 550-foot home runs they hit, everybody’d be saying they were on something. They didn’t even lift weights in those days. They played on alcohol and hot dogs.

Great stuff. Though we actually got more of a kick out of comments from ARod’s former confidant (great gig!) to the NEW YORK POST.

Former Yankees bullpen catcher Mike Borzello told the NEW YORK POST that “It would have been impossible to show me everything behind the curtain except for this. He is not that bright to be able to pull that off.

Say what you will about Canseco, but he seems to bring out the best in people. Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro, and now Rodriguez’ friends. If this keeps up, we’ll be down on our knees praying for another Canseco book (not that we’ve read the first two).

Alcohol… hot dogs… and hardcore amphetamines. Somebody shut this tool up. He’s worse than his old man.

I don’t remember scurvy being a huge problem in the early days of baseball. Can someone ping Steven Goldman for a response?

I tried, but I accidentally got Oscar Goldman. He said he was talking on the phone in his briefcase and the battery was running low, so I never got an answer. I am going to try Colonel Steve Austin sometime this evening. He had a meeting scheduled with Bigfoot for this afternoon.
