Guillen’s ‘Racism’ Saves Buehrle’s Perfect Game

Say, remember a couple days ago when White Sox fans were whipped up in a lather about Ozzie Guillen’s decision to demote Brian Anderson instead of DeWayne Wise in order to make room for Carlos Quentin? Remember how people had gone so far as to claim racism in emails to Guillen?

Mark Buehrle White Sox

(Believe it or not, that’s his happy face.)

Well, it turns out that was far more of a consequential decision than anybody could have imagined. Fast forward to today, and Wise - who, according to a commenter here at SbB, “can’t read a fly ball for anything,” was inserted in center in the 9th inning of Mark Buerhle’s developing perfect game for defensive purposes.

Drama ensued.

Gabe Kapler lifted a long fly ball toward the left-center field wall, and it looked like the perfect game wasn’t just gone, but taking the shutout with it.

And yet Wise, drawing upon that clear defensive liability, robbed Kapler of the home run with a leaping grab over the fence. He tumbled after the catch, nearly dropping the ball, but he held on and presented the ball above his head to the delirium of Hawk Harrelson and the fans in attendance. If YouTube pulls the embedded video, you can watch at the link above; it is a must-watch.

Wise’s grab preserved Buehrle’s perfect game in progress; two easy outs later, Buerhle had retired all 27 batters in order, making him just the 18th pitcher in all of major league history to record a perfect game.

Maybe we should just let Ozzie make the personnel decisions in peace from here on out, folks.

Chill out Brooks and let Ozzie do his thing. He won a world series and made the Pale Hose relevant for the first time in decades.

It’ll take more than one measley transaction to merit a reverse racism claim in baseball. If you’re keeping score on racism in baseball then we can always ask Bob Gibson, Satchel Page and Hank Aaron for their opinions.

Agreed Brooks, if they can let Manny be Manny, then let Ozzie be Ozzie.

Killer game by Buehrle, fantastic catch by Wise. Good stuff.

Hey Arlo, maybe Wise batting .190 is the reason Ozzie didn’t start him and only put him in as a defensive substitute. Who r u anyway, Brian Anderson’s boyfriend?
