The BOSTON GLOBE reported yesterday that fully half of the gray hooded sweatshirts sold through the NFL are adorned with the Patriots logo, a fairly obvious by-product of Bill Belichick’s “hobo coach” look.

(Doesn’t he look sharp? Or homeless?)
It seems strange that such an image-unconscious look has caught on in spite of itself, but we got to thinking: this isn’t a new phenomenon. Through the decades of NFL history, in fact, successful coaches have shaped popular fashion, usually without even trying. Let’s take a look back, shall we?
1960s-’70s: Tom Landry, fedora

As one of the few coaches who continued donning a hat after John F. Kennedy effectively killed the trend by showing up to his inauguration bare-headed, Landry quickly assumed and maintained an impenetrable aura of authority with his Cowboys. Dallas would follow suit and establish itself as one of the most successful, iconic programs in league history.
1980s: Don Shula, Zubaz

What? No, that’s not a Photoshop. We would never lie to you. Why do you ask?
Early 1990s: Bill Parcells, assless chaps

Though Parcells’ choice in legwear was strictly utilitarian - hey, you try strutting around a sideline in slacks without getting a rocking case of swamp ass - certain non-traditional factions of American society seized upon his idea and appropriated it for their own use. A lawsuit is not expected.
Late 1990s: Mike Holmgren, Wonder Woman outfit

We’re not particularly sure why Holmgren chose this outfit or, for that matter, why Paul Tagliabue and the NFL let him wear it on the sidelines. What we do know is that for its lack of ability to leave aspects of Holmgren’s physique to the imagination, it was effective: Holmgren did not record a losing season from 1995-2000.
At this point, Belichick and his curious fashion choice took over and dominated the league; most other franchises have yet to recover. However, there was one coach who, despite a complete lack of sustained success, managed to jumpstart a new trend simply with the power of demand:
Middle 2000s: Dennis Green, ass crown

Sorry, too easy.

Okay, easy to tell you just let this thing get ridonkulous after Landry, but you won’t include the Ditka sweater-vest? Really?
