Grandma’s Got Game: Basketball For Old Ladies

Elderly ladies in Iowa are enjoying an old sport with even older twists - a game that goes by the name of Granny basketball.

Granny Basketball

(”Get me the rock, Myrtle! I’m open in the low post, for mercy’s sakes!“)

THE DAILY IOWAN bounces along news of gals 60 & up having fun taking it to the hoop. However, these senior ballers do it in their own old-fashioned, easy-going style.

With the tagline “A gentle game for women of a certain age,” Granny basketball takes its inspiration from the way the game was played by the ladies of the 1920s - meaning no running, no jumping, no physical contact, and no dunking.

Gee, with these kind of rules, you’d think the players might as well dress up like they did in the ’20s.

Well, they actually do:

Players also were required to don the 1920s basketball uniform of Middy blouses with embroidered numbers on the backs, black bloomers, and stockings to ensure no bare arms or legs were revealed.

Despite the restrictive dress up, many ladies love playing the game. And in addition to getting some good exercise, the players also feel good by hooping it up for a good cause:

The players gladly donate their time and talent to raise money and awareness for nonprofit organizations such as the American Cancer Society. Playing for charity is what Jewell Chapman, a member of the 2008 State Champions Hot Pink Grannies from Des Moines, likes best.

Some Granny ballers even think they’re good enough to take on all comers:

“We will play anyone [for charity],” Chapman said. “Kids, men, anyone as long as they play by Granny rules,” the 64-year-old Chapman said.

Bring it on, Grandma! And we bet we’ll look just as cute in those regulation blouses & bloomers, too!

    Hello,
I may be interested in joining a "Granny Basketball " team if that is possible. I would also like to watch a game. If you have any information on either would you please let me know.
                                          Thank You
