What good conflict management is: a peaceful talking through of grievances and differences, toward the goal of resolving the problem through compromise instead of violence.

What good conflict management isn’t: breaking up an argument between two girls by grabbing one by the throat, slamming her against the wall, and then kicking her repeatedly while she’s on the ground. That seems like a pretty substantial departure from the good qualities, really, but if allegations made to the ST. PAUL PIONEER-PRESS are true, Nathan Tow-Arnett never got that memo.

In an interview with the Pioneer Press today, Neena Kurian alleged that Tow-Arnett, trying to break up a dispute between her and his girlfriend, threw Kurian against a wall before repeatedly kicking her while she was on the ground.

According to Kurian, she had attended a concert with Tow-Arnett and others the night of Oct. 30 before attending a house party early Halloween morning. Kurian alleged that she and Tow-Arnett ’s girl friend got into an argument before Tow-Arnett stepped in.

“Everybody was trying to calm her down, but that’s when he got involved and grabbed me by the neck and threw me up against the wall,” Kurian said. “I don’t know how much she had to drink, but I had three drinks at the most all night. She had been drinking, but he supposedly hadn’t been. He drove everyone there.”

Gophers spokesman Andy Seeley said Tow-Arnett would not be available for comment. Gophers athletics director Joel Maturi said he was aware of the incident and had spoken with Tow-Arnett.

“What Nate says is significantly different from what the allegations are,” Maturi said. “That’s why we have to be careful. That (case) has yet to be determined.”

Right; Nate would probably not tell openly volunteer to people that he had kicked the living bejeezus out of some girl he knows. That would be foolish. It would be downright suicidal to do so without charges being filed, which is where we’re at now.

All that said, if this all went down the way Kurian said and it was at a party, we’re guessing the police aren’t done keeping their eye on this quite yet; there are too many people that would have seen some vile stuff go down. Again, if Kurian’s allegations are true.

When reached for comment, Fake Tim Brewster said “GO BEST CHAMPION FIGHT GOPHER TRY,” then claimed Tow-Arnett was merely fighting off terrorists who would do us harm before adding, “TRY WIN GOPHER BEST.”
